Clothing industry put on notice as fast fashion and unwanted clothing takes environmental toll

    February 13, 2023 /

Early in 2023, like millions of other Australians, Kate Hulett made a new year’s resolution. Key points: Knowing it was a pledge she would struggle to keep, she put it on social media, declaring to her 8,000  followers: “If I write this one out loud, I’ll feel [more] guilty if I break it,” she wrote. “And seeing as I’m a grown woman, mainly fuelled by guilt, this should prove an effective technique. “No new clothes in 2023.” It might seem like a small, extremely first-world, gesture. But for the artist, small business owner and lover of clothes,  it felt like the only useful thing to do in the face of mounting evidence of the cost to…

Trendstop Copenhagen Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2023-24

    January 5, 2023 /

Trendstop brings FashionUnited readers a look at the highlights from the Fall/Winter 2023-24 edition of Copenhagen Fashion Week. As the most sustainable Fashion Week in the calendar, Copenhagen once again delivered a host of inspiring conscious collections. Organic, deadstock and zero waste creations tapped into the messages resonating with contemporary audiences, exploring themes of gender-fluidity and the revival of Y2K looks beloved of Gen Z. Di(Vision) Tilted “Dressed for Disaster” Di(Vision)’s collection was a Y2K inspired disaster complete with wine stained clothing and half eaten meals strewn across guest’s tables. A DIY aesthetic played out in 90’s grunge plaid and patchwork print, continuing the label’s work of upcycling high quality…

    November 6, 2022 /

Over the years we keep each of our designs clean. With our carefully selected, premium quality materials and eye for finishing and detail, we design shoes that last. The fit is just as important as the look of our shoes and pay close attention as we extensively test that each shoe fits perfectly. The guiding idea behind our FW23 collection is a combination of both sturdy and elegant designs adding contemporary elements to the style we are known for. For men this is reflected in for example the Aspen line, an update of our core. Our lightweight boots line with models ranging from classic to outdoor silhouettes is also an…

Chloé enables products to be traceable and resale-ready

    October 7, 2022 /

French fashion house Chloé is introducing what it calls a “new chapter of transparency for luxury” by enabling its products to be fully traceable and resale-ready, an initiative that it adds is “a first in the industry”. Dubbed the “Vertical” project, the innovative digital ID system features technology powered by EON, and allows users to scan the labels of Chloé products as part of its spring/summer 2023 collection with a smartphone to trace their item from field to the finished piece. The digital ID will also include an ownership certificate, which will allow direct resale through pre-loved marketplace Vestiaire Collective, to streamline the resale process “enabling full circularity”. The technology…

New masculine aesthetics: Fluid tailoring and dandyism

    September 24, 2022 /

Is the influence of the streetwear hype losing ground? Are women’s suits the future of men’s suits? Finally, is dandyism, inherited from the 19th century, becoming trendy again? These are all the questions we asked ourselves after the presentations of the autumn/winter 23/24 men’s collections. Workwear and streetwear influences are giving way. It seems that the looks of workers or residents of city neighbourhoods are no longer making the privileged world of fashion dream. The value of work has gone out the window. “With a coat retailing at 800 euros, we want to look chic, dressed up, and not think that we could find it in a streetwear wardrobe,” said…

From hip flasks to frog shoes: The FW23 menswear accessories trends

    August 9, 2022 /

Accessories and shoes are what make a look complete and ensure that an outfit is elevated. That’s why it’s worth taking a closer look at the special details and ‘it-pieces’ that defined the men’s fashion weeks this season. FashionUnited has summarised the highlights from animal-cool shoes to picnic accessories. Messenger bag With its long strap, the messenger bag is one of the it-pieces of menswear for FW23. It can be worn casually dangling from a shoulder or as a ‘crossbody’ – like a seat belt – and also offers plenty of storage space. It was seen on the catwalks of Givenchy, with a fur trim, and Louis Vuitton in beige…

Balenciaga to focus on collections and heritage, not hype

    July 1, 2022 /

Ahead of Paris fashion week, Balenciaga creative director Demna has let it be known the house will not seek to create buzz via controversy for its upcoming show, instead focusing on product, heritage and craftsmanship. After a series of high profile faux pas, from a campaign that featured children, props that included a Supreme Court ruling concerning child pornography, and a relationship with troubled collaborator Ye, also known as Kanye West, who’s anti-semitic remarks attracted a slew of criticism and termination of contracts, Balenciaga, while not exactly pariah status, was certainly outcast after it offered muted apologies before issuing a proper mea culpa. But like most things in fashion, it…

Phoebe Philo confirms September launch date for debut collection

    June 27, 2022 /

When Phoebe Philo announced she would return to the fashion industry with a brand under her own name, and financed by LVMH, she already had a three and a half year hiatus. This was July, 2021. That hiatus will have been extended to five years, as Ms Philo on Thursday confirmed the brand’s first collection would be available to purchase from its website, phoebephilo.com, from September 2023. In the company’s first ever Instagram post, the studio said: “Our inaugural collection will be revealed and available on our website, in September 2023. We will be opening for registration in July 2023 and look forward to being back in touch then.” Further…
